God is our refuge and strength. A very present help in trouble.--Psalm 46:1
Here is the story behind the beautiful and comforting hymn "It Is Well With My Soul". Horatio Spafford, a prominent attorney in Chicago, was also a loyal friend and supporter of D.L.Moody. In 1871, Spafford lost his extensive real estate investments during the great Chicago fire. To life up the spirit of his family, he decided to send them on vacation to Europe. He himself was detained by urgent business, but he sent his wife and four daughters on the S.S.Ville du Harve. halfway, the ship was struck by an English vessel and all four of his daughters were drowned, and his wife was miraculously saved. Upon receiving this shocking news, Spafford took another ship to join his wife. When the ship passed the approximate place where his daughters had drowned, God comforted him and inspired him to pen"When sorrows like sea billows roll; ...It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul."
